Purpose

This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials.

State and territory jurisdictions may have different licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.

This course provides an excellent entryway into entry-level employment opportunities in Carpentry.

Entry Requirements:

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements for this qualification in the Training Package, the institute’s entry requirements are as below:

  • 18 years or older at commencement of course.
  • Completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent.
  • IELTS (Academic) band score 6 or equivalent score in other English tests including, PTE, TOEFL, and CAE.

This course is delivered and accessed in English. The students must have LLN (Language, Literacy and Numeracy) Skills for the level of this course.  Students must provide current (test date less than 2 years) and valid proof of English Language Proficiency by any of the following tests:

  • IELTS (International English language testing System) minimum overall score 6
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) minimum overall score 50
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet based test) minimum overall score 60
  • C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English – Advanced CAE) minimum overall score 180

The student can be exempt from English proficiency condition by providing evidence any of the following:

  • They are a citizen of United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland.
  • They have completed minimum 5 years of study in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Republic of Ireland.
  • They have completed (within the past 2 years) in Australia in English – requirements for senior secondary certification of education.
  • They have completed (within the past 2 years) in Australia in English – substantial component of AQF Level 4 or higher on a student visa.

Students must complete their practicals in the United Institute’s CPC facilities (nominated warehouse) or as advised otherwise.

Physical Requirements:  Students undertaking this course must have the physical capability to skill fully use their hands, lift and carry heavy materials, demonstrate good coordination, have clear vision, and be able to work in various positions and spaces.

Safety Requirement: Every student is required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety boots and protective clothing, at every practical training and assessment session

Duration:

This course will be delivered over 60 weeks as following:

  • Classroom Delivery:40 Weeks
  • Practical Placement: 8 Weeks
  • Holidays:12 Weeks

This qualification provides a pathway to work in cabinet making role. Possible job titles may include:

  • Carpenter – Commercial
  • Carpenter – Formwork
  • Carpenter – Residential

Course Structure:

The course duration has been calculated on 20 hours per week (60 weeks in total including holidays/term break) of Training and Assessment.  All students are expected to give few hours per unit as Self-Directed Study.

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:

  • 34 units of competency:
    • 27 core units
    • 7 electives

This program takes place in a classroom environment with access to a simulated / workshop environment where required. Practical learning and assessment take place in a simulated / workshop environment. The facilities are equipped with all the required equipment.

COMPLETION

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a nationally recognised CPC30220 – Certificate III in Carpentry. Students who do not complete all units may be eligible for a Statement of Attainment for partial completion.
